What obligation do we have to other Jews? And what obligation do we have to people outside our faith? What do we do when those two questions are in tension? This text study explores the tension between our obligations to Klal Yisrael — the collective Jewish people — and our ethical responsibilities to humanity as a whole. Through biblical, rabbinic and modern sources, we’ll examine moments when Jewish texts call us to prioritize our community and when they challenge us to look outward. Together, we’ll ask: How do we balance love for our people with the universal call to justice?
