The Jewish year begins with the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Our observance includes hearing the Shofar, listening to Torah and the sounds of Kol Nidre, and concluding with a Yizkor memorial service as part of a full program of traditional and contemporary prayers and music. Please contact Religious Committee Co-Chair David Schulberg at religion@congshirami.org for information about attending High Holy Day services.
We celebrate Jewish holidays throughout the year, often in combination with Shabbat worship. We welcome guests to a potluck dinner in the Sukkah, to dance with our Torahs on Simchat Torah, and to light Chanukah candles and taste latkes at a family Chanukah celebration.
We plant trees and share a seder meal while discussing Jewish perspectives on environmental stewardship at Tu BiSh’vat. Our Purim service features adults and children doing silly things in costume while recalling the courage of Esther and Mordechai.
Our Community Passover Seder has become a major interfaith event in partnership with our friends at Eden Church in Hayward. And at Shavuot we study together and celebrate the gift of Torah in our lives.
All our holiday services are designed to welcome newcomers and interfaith families. Check our Calendar or contact religion@congshirami.org for more information.
